Before you even put your collections on it, your Museum in Box has operating system software that makes it work, this software is called Firmware. Think Windows for your Museum in a Box.
We have now updated this Operating System firmware and there is no time like the present to do it. Don’t worry, your audio collections are stored on the Box’s SD card and will not be affected by this update.
Updating with your Pink Update Card.
If you have no problems with your Wi-Fi connections, then simply Booping your Pink Update Card should be enough, to connect to our server and download this new firmware, this may take a bit of time so do be patient.
If you do have problems getting connected, then you will need to follow the steps below to update your firmware.
Updating via your computer
To do this you will need
- Your wonderful Museum in a Box
- A USB-C cable
- A cup of Tea
Let’s begin
1: Plug your box into your computer with a USB-C cable.
2: Open a web browser and navigate to
https://mcqn.com/share/museuminabox-upgrade.html
3: Click on the blue ‘Connect’ button, a window will pop up displaying the message “mcqn.com wants to connect to a serial port”
4: Select the correct USB port from the list. On Windows this will be “USB/Jtag serial debug unit”
NB: On other devices different ports will be displayed, see the additional notes below if you are not sure which is the correct port.
5: Once you have selected the device click the blue ‘Connect’ button
6: In the next window click on ‘Install Museum in a box’ and then click ‘install’ to confirm the installation.
7: This will trigger the install, it may take a minute, do not unplug the box or refresh the web page while this is running.
8. Drink your Tea
9: You will know the process is complete when the box says ‘ready’, and the web page says, ‘Installation complete’.
You can now close the web page, finish your tea and unplug the box from your laptop. It will have the latest firmware installed.
This process refreshes the box code entirely, so if you were previously connected to a Wi-Fi network you will need to boop the yellow ‘Wi-Fi’ card and follow the instructions. The audio on your box is stored on an SD card and is not affected by this update.
Selecting the correct port
The port your box is connected to will show up with the text “USB/Jtag serial debug unit”
And an identifier eg COMx (windows), ttyACMx (linux) /dev/tty/xxxx (Mac)
USB-C Cables
If nothing is showing in the list and your box is plugged in and lit up it is worth trying a different cable. Some USB cables are for charge only and don’t include the additional data wires required.
Installing a Driver
You may need to install a driver so that your computer can use the USB port to send and receive data to the device. If you click ‘cancel’ on the select device window from step three, you will see instructions to install the correct drivers on your computer.
